The Non-Mercury Dental Association (NAMD) supports the call by several health and environmental NGOs to end the use of mercury in dentistry in the European Union as part of the declaration of Berlin for the elimination of these amalgams in Europe by 2022, at the Civil Society Summit, which took place on 21 and 22 November 2017.
Mercury is currently used in dental amalgam for fillings and is easily replaceable. This dangerous toxic can damage the nervous, renal, endocrine system, especially the reproductive system and the thyroid. It is therefore a powerful endocrine disruptor. And since the dental amalgam contains 50% mercury, the Minamata Mercury Convention requires each participating country to reduce its use.
In 2017, the European Union adopted a ban on amalgams for children under 15 years of age, as well as for pregnant and lactating women from July 2018. The new rule also requires each Member State to draw up a national plan for phase-out of mercury-based amalgam and asks the European Commission to make a recommendation for 2020 on the desirability of completely eliminating these amalgams. This two-day summit has attracted the attention of the dental societies of universities, national, European and international NGOs for the environment, health and women’s rights, as well as European stakeholders and policy makers. Professor André Picot, President of ATC (Chemo Toxicology Association), one of the NGOs that participated in the summit, said: “The Berlin Declaration marks the beginning of the end of dental amalgam to mercury, an ancestral pollutant of the nineteenth century without leading role in the dentistry of the twenty-first century for consumers in France.
